What IPA is, and the dozen symbols that actually matter
The International Phonetic Alphabet looks like a barrier and is mostly a shortcut. You need about a dozen symbols and two stress marks to get the value out of it, and you can ignore the rest for good.
English spelling is a poor guide to English pronunciation, and everybody knows it. The letters "ough" carry at least six different sounds. The word "colonel" has an r in it that no letter accounts for. If you learn a word from the page, you learn a spelling and you guess at a sound, and the guess is frequently wrong in ways that make you hard to understand.
The International Phonetic Alphabet exists to solve exactly this. It is a set of symbols in which each symbol stands for one sound, regardless of language and regardless of spelling. It was developed in the late nineteenth century by language teachers, which is worth remembering: it was built as a teaching tool first and became a linguistics tool second.
You do not need all of it
The full IPA chart covers every sound in every documented human language and it is genuinely intimidating. For English you need a small fraction of it, and about a dozen symbols account for almost all of the trouble learners actually have. The rest either look like the Latin letter you would expect — p, b, t, d, k, m, n, l, f, v, s, z — or you will never need them.
Here are the ones worth twenty minutes of your life.
The vowels that cause the most trouble
- ə — the schwa. The single most common vowel sound in English and the one learners most often get wrong, because it appears where the spelling suggests something fuller. The first vowel of "about", the second of "sofa", the middle of "chocolate". It is short, weak and completely neutral, and English rhythm depends on it.
- ɪ versus iː — the vowel in "ship" against the vowel in "sheep". Not merely short against long: the tongue position differs too. Many languages have only one sound in this region, which is why the pair has to be learned deliberately rather than absorbed.
- æ versus e — "bad" against "bed". Another pair that a great many learners collapse into a single sound somewhere between the two.
- ʌ — the vowel in "cup", "love", "blood". Note that all three are spelled differently. This is exactly the case where the letters are actively misleading.
- ɜː — the vowel in "bird", "learn", "word". Again, three spellings, one sound.
The consonants that do not exist in many languages
- θ and ð — the two "th" sounds. θ is the one in "think" and "bath"; ð is the voiced one in "this" and "mother". English spells both with the same two letters and gives you nothing to tell them apart, which is precisely why the transcription is useful.
- ʃ and ʒ — the "sh" of "shoe" and the sound in the middle of "measure" or "vision". ʒ is rare in English and almost never spelled in a way that would warn you.
- ŋ — the "ng" of "sing". One sound, not two, and importantly not followed by a hard g in most accents.
The two marks that matter more than the vowels
In a transcription you will see a raised vertical tick before a syllable, ˈ, and sometimes a lowered one, ˌ. The raised mark shows primary stress; the lowered one shows secondary stress. They are the most valuable part of the transcription and the part learners skip.
Here is why. English is a stress-timed language, and listeners use stress to identify words before they have finished processing the individual sounds. Put the stress in the wrong place and a native listener may not recognise the word at all, even if every vowel and consonant is textbook. Get the stress right with imperfect vowels and you will usually be understood without difficulty. If you have limited attention — and everyone does — spend it on the tick, not on ə.
Stress also moves, and the transcription records it. The noun "ˈrecord" and the verb "reˈcord" are the same letters with different stress and different vowels. "PHOtograph", "phoTOgrapher" and "photoGRAPHic" shift the stress each time, and the vowels reduce to schwa wherever the stress is not. That last part is the real prize: once you can see stress, the schwas stop looking arbitrary.
British and American transcriptions of the same word
A dictionary will often give you two transcriptions, and they differ in predictable ways rather than randomly.
- The r at the end of a syllable is written in American transcriptions and generally not in British ones: "car" appears as /kɑːr/ or /kɑː/. British Received Pronunciation is non-rhotic, meaning the r is only pronounced before a vowel.
- The vowel of "lot" and "not" is a rounded ɒ in British transcription and typically ɑː in American.
- Words like "dance" and "bath" get ɑː in British transcription and æ in American — and note that a great many British speakers use æ here too, because the transcription describes one prestige accent rather than a country.
- American transcriptions frequently use ɚ and ɝ for the r-coloured vowels, where British uses ə and ɜː.
None of this means one is correct. Pick the one that matches the English you hear most and the target you actually have, be consistent, and do not spend energy converting between them.
Using IPA without becoming a phonetics student
The practical use of a transcription is narrow and worth it: when you meet a word you have only ever read, the transcription tells you where the stress goes and whether the vowel is the one you assumed. That is it. You are not learning to transcribe, and you never need to produce IPA yourself.

A caution worth keeping: a transcription is a model, not a recording. It flattens variation, it describes a reference accent rather than any individual speaker, and it says nothing about how a word changes when it sits in connected speech next to other words. It is a map. Very useful, and not the territory.

Neither is more correct. Choose the accent you actually hear most and stay with one convention rather than mixing them.
Is stress more important than getting the vowels right?
For being understood, usually yes. English listeners identify words partly by their stress pattern, so misplacing the stress can make a word unrecognisable even when every individual sound is accurate.
